HOW TO CHOOSE A POMERANIAN BREEDER

|
Finding a happy, healthy and socialized Pomeranian is a difficult task. There have been many so-called Pomeranian breeders that have bred Poms for money only-with no thought or care as to the welfare of the Pom. Due to a huge influx of these breeders, most of these Pomeranians have deteriorated health wise, and the Poms wonderful, charming personality has also suffered. I constantly see ads for Teacup Poms or Munchkins. These ads are totally misleading; as there is no such thing as a Teacup Pom or a Munchkin. The AKC breed standard has set forth criteria that responsible breeders try to meet. This is not to say that all Pomeranian breeders fall into this category. There are just as many dedicated Pomeranian breeders who truly love this breed, and continue to strive to breed excellent Pomeranians as companion dogs. Without those breeders, there wouldn't be too many homes enjoying these wonderful Poms. No matter how you find a Pom for sale (newspaper, internet, pet shop, veterinarian owned pet shop etc.) please, ask the breeder many-many questions. Just because a Pom may be purchased with AKC papers (or other registration entities), does not mean it is a quality and healthy Pom!!!!! That assumption is a huge mistake, one that many people make not realizing the consequences. And how would you be expected to know, unless you've spent thousands of hours (or years) researching your chosen breed. The quality of the Pom, its health, conformation and overall behavior is what is most critical. If something looks too good to be true, it usually is! You may save a couple of hundred dollars up front; but you also could end up with thousands of additional dollars being spent at your vet's office. Whether you're looking for a pet quality, breeding or show quality Pomeranian makes no difference. Be careful, do your research, ask questions until your blue in the face. If you can, always check out the breeder's facilities. A good breeder will want you to do just that. A good breeder will want to show off their years of hard work; and will want to ask you questions too. A good breeder will take pleasure in spending time with you, and should always be there in the future to answer your questions and lend a helping hand. A reputable breeder is a proud parent of their dogs, and cares deeply for their dog's welfare, as they would their own children. It is these breeders who want to hear from you once in awhile (or better yet send pictures) after you have purchased one of their dogs. And yes, they want you to call or write to them and let them know of any problems you may be having with your Pom. We are here to help and educate dog lovers at any time. The purchase of any dog is a fulltime commitment. For better or worse, that little pup is going to depend on you for the rest of its life---for everything! Think about the fact that your little friend will need your care for possibly the next 15 years. And, when they get sick or old and feeble---your trusted companion will need you even more. Are you willing to spend the money, time and effort to do this? If your puppy is out of control, will you take the time and more money to go to dog classes? Think carefully. All puppies are cute....but they grow up and require 24/7 love and care for a very long time. Good luck, and again-be careful out there. I hope this helps you in your search for your next companion. Most sincerely,
John & Susan Landry
